Joseph Kasper

Pastor Kasper grew up in Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. After high school, he traveled north to New Ulm, Minnesota for college. He studied Biblical languages at Martin Luther College and graduated with his BA in 2018. While there, he also met his wife, Jazzmin.

After graduating, he continued his pastoral studies at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. He graduated from the Seminary in 2022 and was assigned to Shepherd of the Plains Lutheran Church here in Lubbock!

Pastor Kasper loves exploring the opportunities to spread Christ in the Lubbock community. He’d love to get to know you over a cup of coffee!

What We Believe

  • We believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, free from error. What we believe and teach is rooted in the timeless, changeless words of God’s Word where he tells us about himself. It is our guideline for living out our faith as Christians.

  • We believe there is only one true God who is holy, eternal, and almighty. In the Bible, God reveals himself as Triune - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe that we lost the image of God when Adam & Eve disobeyed God and gave into the temptation of Satan. Since that time, all people are born sinful and separated from God. We’re unable to reconcile ourselves to God on our own.

  • We believe God sent his only Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life and endure death to take away the sins of all people. Because of this, we are fully and freely forgiven. We believe that faith comes through the saving gospel message and the work of the Holy Spirit on our hearts.

  • We believe that baptism is a holy act instituted by God. Using water and God’s Word, baptism offers and gives the forgiveness of sins, spiritual life, and eternal salvation.

We believe that baptism is meant for both young and old, including children. Infants also are sinful and therefore need the spiritual rebirth brought about through baptism.

  • At Shepherd of the Plains, we practice Member Communion. We believe that communion is an expression of our unity in faith. We’d love to have a conversation with you to discuss what we believe before you make this public confession. Contact Pastor Kasper with your questions.

  • Before becoming a member, Pastor will take you through our Bible Information Class where you’ll cover topics like faith, salvation, baptism, and holy communion. This Bible basics course lays the groundwork for what we believe at Shepherd of the Plains.

It’s a safe place to ask your spiritual questions and get answers from the Bible. You can learn more by reaching out to Pastor Kasper.

What is a Lutheran?

The Lutheran Church has deep roots dating back more than 500 years. The teachings of the Lutheran Church are not new - they are the teachings of the Bible!

We believe that our salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, and based on Scripture alone.

Our History

Shepherding Lubbock since 1975

Our congregation organized itself as Shepherd of the Plains in 1975, initially meeting in homes and later a bank building. After acquiring the property at 73rd and Frankford, this group met initially in portable buildings during the construction of the current building, containing a chapel and fellowship hall.

At that time, southwest Lubbock was still mostly cotton fields, and in those early days members would sometimes have to shovel sand away from the west-facing entrance doors. Shepherd of the Plains has been served by a number of faithful pastors over the years, and in 2019 expanded its fellowship hall and kitchen to serve our growing needs.

Across our website you’ll see various photos from our rich history serving the people of Lubbock!
